Christian pro-life groups are shocked that a 25-year-old woman has been allowed to die by euthanasia in Spain.
Paraplegic Noelia Castillo Ramos was diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) at a young age — and had suffered a traumatic life.
Spanish and European courts refused to halt her euthanasia at her family’s request — saying she was capable of making her own decision.
Evangelical Focus writes that the state surrendered too quickly — by wrongfully believing that the dignity of life can be defined in terms of suffering.
NOELIA FACED IMMENSE LIFE CHALLENGES
Noelia died on March 26 after she had faced immense life challenges since childhood and following nearly two years of a legal battle waged by her parents to preserve her life.
According to Spanish law, to request euthanasia, an individual must be of legal age and be both mentally capable and fully conscious at the time of the request.
They also must “be suffering from a serious and incurable disease or a serious, chronic, and disabling condition, as certified by the attending physician.”
On March 24, the European Court of Human Rights rejected the interim measures requested by Noelia’s family to halt her euthanasia.
NOELIA EXPLAINS WHY SHE OPTED FOR ASSISTED SUICIDE
On the eve of her death, an interview with Noelia aired on Spanish television in which she described how she saw her situation:
“I have no desire to do anything — not to go out, not to eat, not to do anything at all.”
“Sleeping is very difficult for me; furthermore, I suffer from back pain as well as leg pain.”
“I HAVE NO GOALS AND NO OBJECTIVES”
“I have always felt alone, because I have never felt understood; no one has ever empathised with me, and I have always struggled with interpersonal relationships,” she recounted.
“Even before requesting euthanasia, I viewed my world as very dark; I saw a very dark ending ahead of me.”
“I had no goals, no objectives — nothing at all — and I still have no goals, no objectives.”
NOELIA’S TRAGIC, TRAUMATIC HISTORY
Noelia had been under state guardianship since the age of 13.
Due to their limited financial situation, her parents had to rely on public resources for her care.
Under state guardianship she was brutally assaulted multiple times in 2022 and jumped out of a fifth floor window, leaving her a paraplegic.
Since then, she has had to use a wheelchair and take different medications to relieve the pain.
Although these medications are effective, they caused severe side effects.
CHRISTIAN LAWYERS CHALLENGED PSYCHIATRISTS WHO SAID NOELIA COULD MAKE HER OWN DECISIONS
After conducting several mental capacity tests and treatments, the psychiatrists who treated Noelia concluded that, despite her BPD, she was capable of making decisions about her life and death.
According to Abogados Cristianos (Christian Lawyers) — the organisation representing her father in his efforts to prevent his daughter’s euthanasia, Noelia had been officially recognised as having a 74% disability due to mental illness.
“The Constitutional Court makes it clear that euthanasia cannot be administered when the source of suffering is a mental illness and that the state has an obligation to protect these individuals from the risk of suicide,” Christian Lawyers emphasised.
Noelia has even raised doubts about her paraplegia, saying “I am not bedridden or anything of the sort; I get out of bed. I shower all by myself.”
“As you have seen, I apply my own make-up and manage my own affairs.”
“THIS CASE EXPOSES THE FAILURE OF EUTHANASIA LAW”
According to Christian Lawyers: “This case exposes the failure of the euthanasia law. It facilitates suicide without the individual having received prior mental health treatment.”
“Without treatment, there is no free decision. There is abandonment.”
The Spanish Bishops’ Conference’s Subcommittee for the Family and Defence of Life expressed the view that Noelia’s story reflects “an accumulation of personal suffering and institutional failings that challenge the whole of society.”
It said her situation “cannot be interpreted solely through the lens of individual autonomy”
“ASSISTED SUICIDE IS A DELIBERATE RUPTURE OF THE BOND OF CARE”
“Rather, it demands a deeper perspective — one capable of recognising the weight of psychological suffering, loneliness, and hopelessness.”
The Spanish bishops underscored that “euthanasia and assisted suicide are not medical acts, but rather a deliberate rupture of the bond of care”
“They constitute a societal defeat when presented as a response to human suffering.”
“The response to suffering cannot be to bring about death, but rather to offer closeness, accompaniment, appropriate care, and comprehensive support.”
“THIS CASE SETS A DANGEROUS PRECEDENT”
Evangelical Focus writes: “This case sets a dangerous precedent in Spanish society, suggesting that a life of extreme suffering is no longer ‘worthy’ of being lived.”
“Ours is a failed state that allows its citizens to resort to death not only for physical pain, but also for mental illness, as in Noelia’s case.”
“The state is making a serious mistake by believing that the dignity of life can be defined in terms of suffering.”
“Noelia’s pain is real and her desire to end her suffering is legitimate and entirely understandable.”
“PEOPLE HAVE BECOME DISPOSABLE CONSUMER GOODS”
“However, even though she is broken inside and has lost the will to live, Noelia was made in the image of God.”
“Her life has incalculable value,” declared Evangelical Focus.
“This is a heartbreaking story that should move us deeply.”
“We live in a time of a total loss of the value of human life, where people have become disposable consumer goods.”
“THE STATE SURRENDERED TOO QUICKLY WITH NOELIA”
“Society was unable to restore hope to Noelia, and then offered her the quick way out, disguised as a ‘dignified’ death.”
“That is quite the opposite of the message of the Gospel, which delves into the heart of suffering to redeem it — not necessarily to eliminate it.”
“God can redeem a life, even in such extreme circumstances.”
“The state surrendered too quickly with Noelia,” asserted Evangelical Focus.
“God would never have done so, and neither should we surrender to the suffering of others by offering death as a solution.”
