More than 200 school chaplains are needed across the country.
One the biggest school chaplaincy providers SU Australia is currently running its biggest ever recruitment drive.
It says chaplains provide essential social, emotional and pastoral support for students, staff, and the wider school community.
School chaplains support the holistic well-being of school communities across Australia through one-on-one support, running small groups and connecting with staff, students and families.

SU Australia Director of Field Transformation Christy Marhin says: “They are loved and cherished in their roles”.
“School chaplains are at the heart of Australian schools, helping children deal with difficult situations and overcome adversity, so that they can make the most of their education,” she explained.
“We currently have over 200 positions waiting to be filled, so we are running a recruitment campaign to find those individuals that would flourish in this role and help to create caring and supportive schools.”

“While many may have a preconceived idea of what a chaplain looks like, our more than 700 chaplains nationwide are actually as diverse as the communities they serve,” Ms. Marhin continued.
“They span all age groups and backgrounds, each bringing a unique set of skills and life experiences to the role,” she added.
“We place a lot of mums in roles because the position offers flexibility so that they can still care for their family.”
“We also see a lot of applications from people desiring a career change to a job they feel holds purpose and meaning.”
THE WORK OF A SCHOOL CHAPLAIN
Chaplains work in prevention and support, helping students find a better way to deal with issues ranging from family breakdown and loneliness to friendships and mental health.
They provide a listening ear and a caring presence for children and young people in crisis, and those who just need a friend.
They also provide support for staff and parents in school communities.
THE SU AUSTRALIA NETWORK OF SCHOOL CHAPLAINS
In 2025, SU Australia had 700 chaplains working across 1000 schools.
Chaplains reported they held 656 weekly breakfast clubs, ran 971 social and emotional support programs, 260 mentor and role-modelling sessions, and provided 29,410 school-based meals.
They also reported averaging 35 pastoral conversations per three-day work week with a range of students, staff and school community members, totalling close to 25,000 vital conversations each year.
HOW TO APPLY TO BE A SCHOOL CHAPLAIN
Applications are open for hundreds of part-time and full-time roles which are partially funded through the Federal Government’s National Student Wellbeing Program, an initiative designed to assist in the well-being of school communities.
