American pastor, theologian and best-selling Christian author Voddie Baucham has passed away at the age of 56 after a medical emergency.
“We are saddened to inform friends that our dear brother, Voddie Baucham, Jr., has left the land of the dying and entered the land of the living,” his Founders Ministries announced on social media.
“He entered into his rest and the immediate presence of the Saviour whom he loved, trusted, and served since he was converted as a college student.”
“Please pray for Bridget, their nine children and several grandchildren.
“Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints. – Psalm 116:15”
VODDIE BAUCHAM WAS WIDELY RESPECTED AMONG EVANGELICALS
Voddie Baucham was known for his defence of Biblical authority.
He was widely respected among Evangelicals for his preaching on Biblical manhood, family discipleship and cultural apologetics.
“We are living in a time, in an era when there are people who are desperately wicked, and in desperate need of repentance and faith, in desperate need of the Gospel,” he told The Christian Post last year.
He added: “And we’re being told that the wickedness is, in fact, the Gospel.”
“A NEGATIVE WORLDVIEW ALIENATES PEOPLE FROM THE ONLY HOPE THEY HAVE”
Voddie Baucham went on to note that such a worldview is destructive.
That’s because it not only calls good evil and evil good, but also “alienates people from the only hope that they have.”
“At the end of the day, this is not just about laws that we don’t like, or that we disagree with, or that we want changed,” he said.
“Laws are important, but ultimately our golden rule is not just that people would be forbidden from certain things, but that they will be free from them.”
VODDIE BAUCHAM’S LIFE JOURNEY
Born to a single mum in Los Angeles, he rose to prominence as pastor of Grace Family Baptist church which he planted in Houston, Texas — before becoming Dean of Theology at the African Christian University of Lusaka in Zambia where he served for nine years.
According to Voddie Baucham Ministries which he founded in 1993, he held degrees from Houston Baptist University (BA in Christianity/BA in Sociology), Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary (M.Div.), and Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary (D.Min.) with additional post-graduate study at the University of Oxford in England.
He often drew large crowds to conferences where he was speaking in the US and abroad.
HE WAS A BEST-SELLING AUTHOR
Voddie Baucham was also a best-selling author and a founding faculty member of the Institute of Public Theology.
His books included Family Driven Faith, Fault Lines, and The Ever-Loving Truth — works that emphasised the centrality of Scripture in addressing modern cultural and social challenges.
Fault Lines became a bestseller and made him a leading voice in warning the Church against what he described as the encroachment of social justice ideology.
HEALTH BATTLE IN RECENT YEARS
In 2021, Baucham underwent quadruple bypass surgery after suffering heart failure.
His health battle rallied Christians worldwide to pray and contribute financially to his care.
He survived that crisis and often spoke about God’s sustaining grace during his recovery.
FOUNDING PRESIDENT OF SEMINARY
Earlier this year, Founders Ministries’ president Tom Ascol announced Voddie Baucham as the founding president of their newly established Founders Seminary.
“What a privilege it is to invest your life in training the next generation of pastors,” Voddie said at the time.
Friends, associates and fellow leaders are remembering him as a bold preacher with a pastor’s heart.
